纽约州立大学―宾汉姆顿分校binghamton university suny 设校于公元1946年,其前身为三城学院（triple cities college）,设校目的是提供当第二次世界大战后的老兵（local veterans）战后的技能训练。宾汉姆顿大学binghamton university suny于公元1950年并入纽约州立大学体系（state university of new york,简称suny）,当时校名为哈波学院（harpur college）,直到1992年正式改名为纽约州立大学宾汉姆顿大学（binghamton university）。
纽约州立大学―宾汉姆顿分校binghamton university suny为纽约州历史最悠久的公立大学,1953年后就已经发展成系所、学门健全的综合性大学,吸引相当多当地优秀的学生前来就读。50年代后期,哈波学院的学生申请人数与学术声誉如日中天,并且被纽约州政府任命州立大学系统博士班学程暨学生研究中心（doctorate-granting university centers）,当时纽约州仅有4所州立大学设有博士班。
纽约州立大学―宾汉姆顿分校binghamton university suny靠山面河,校园前有美国东海岸最长的河流--萨斯奎汉纳河（susquehanna river）流过,为繁忙的校园生活增加了不少悠闲的情趣。校地面积887英姆（acres）,校园并有四分之一的面积是自然保护区（the nature preserve）,其中包括森林、湿地、与湖泊。珍贵的自然资源有利于该校农学院与自然科学院的发展。该校善用得天独厚的自然资源,在自然保护区旁设置了纽约州唯一一座多温调节温室（multi-climate greenhouse）；温室内规划有热带、温带、沙漠与高山植物区,该校植物学、生物学、生物化学等相关科系学生长在温室中进行跨领域研究。除了丰沛的自然资源外,该校的人文艺术设备也相当完善。校内的安德森艺术中心是一座世界级的表演厅,其中设备有：剧院、演艺厅、与艺术展览厅；该校人文学科学生长在此地进行成果发表与个人展览。
根据2003年美国kiplinger‘s personal finance magazine针对各公立大学的评比,宾汉姆顿大学binghamton university suny 是最值得就读（best buys）与最多州外学生（out of state）就读的学校；根据us today 2004年公布的统计资料,在该校博士班学程中,有五分之一的学生可以藉由本校与姊妹校的学术协议,到海外的姊妹学校进行学术研究与进修。该校的博士班学生海外研究人数是全国的第14名。而该校也在2004年被选为「最具国际观的学校」的前五名。

宾汉姆顿市是标准的大陆型气候,冬冷夏热,四季分明。夏季有30几度的高温,冬天平均气温约为摄氏零度左右,但最冷可下探到摄氏零下20度。降雪情形,约从每年10月底断断续续下到5月初才停。秋天是宾汉姆顿最美丽的季节,满城火红的枫叶为这个冷色系色彩浓郁的北方之都增添了难得的热情。
