美国大学根据经费来源不同有公立私立之分,很多学生及家长会纠结于上公立好还是上私立好的问题。 

　　其实公立和私立互有优劣,相对私立大学来说,公立大学一般学生人数较多（1万人以上）,教学设施拥挤一些,课堂人数（本科阶段）要比私立多一些,奖学金的比例也要少一些,但学费便宜一些,但是私立大学在研究经费和研究项目有一定优势。如果读本科,建议尽量选择私立大学,因为本科四年,大学体验很重要,私立大学对学生关注度要高一些。如果读研究生,公立私立没有太大差别,重点看这个学校的研究实力和就业情况。 

　　当然,如果家庭经济压力比较大,也可以选择一些性价比比较高的美国公立大学。美国著名的财经杂志kiplinger最近推出了《2011年美国性价比最高的公立大学》。这个榜单从500多所四年制公立大学中挑选出了120所公立大学,考核该校的学术水平（包括sat/act考试成绩、录取率和保有率、师生比例、四年和六年毕业率）和学习费用与奖学金,其中学术水平的权重在三分之二以上。在费用和奖学金上对比了州内学生收费和州外学生收费以及学校授予的助学金的情况（need-based aid,即根据家庭经济条件授予的助学金）。这份榜单对我们选择公立大学（本科）有非常大的帮助。

　　一般来说美国公立大学的学费在25000美元/年,比顶尖的私立大学35000美元/年的学费着实便宜不少。选择性价比高的公立大学,对家庭经济条件不是特别宽裕的学生,应该是一种理性选择。 

　　当年老本杰明创立学校时,说他的大学应该是一个为公民而设立的教育,其目的是通往生意或是政治的成功。因此,宾州大学最与众不同的显著特点,是重心放在了专业预科和职业培训上,而不是当时新英格兰那些高等学府的纯学术钻研和灌输。

　　宾州大学二百四十英亩的校园虽然紧靠尘嚣,却闹中取静。学生们每天都要经过林木掩映中本杰明·富兰克林的注视和那颗撑破成两半的大扣子著名雕塑,它记载下该校创始人富兰克林的一段轶话。

　　在宾州大学中处处可见提倡实用的本杰明·富兰克林雕像,有的庄严,有的亲切。这座雕像不就像是与今天学生们朝夕相处的一位长者？

　　宾州大学的灯火与费城的灯火浑然一体。费城是美国开国元勋通过独立宣言之处,是美国建国时的首都,对美国俨说有革命圣地意义,尽管近年来地位下隆为美国第四大城市,但对宾州大学的学生们夜晚出门放松消遣来说,还是近水楼台。

　　其实你也许早已见过宾州大学了。由美国电影明星汤姆·汉克斯主演的电影《费城》里著名的一幕,就是在宾州大学的凡·派特图书馆（van pelt library）里拍摄的。

　　宾州大学与宾州州立大学这两所大学,名称相近,常常被混淆。

　　其实,后者（pennsylvania state university）是坐落在宾州中部大学园（college park）的公立大学,以学生们喜欢体育和校园兄弟姊妹会的泛滥而著称。

　　前者（university of pennsylvania,简秒upenn）则坐落在美国第四大城市费城的市中心近侧,是八所常春藤盟校的一员,美国开国元勋之一本杰明·富兰克林亲手创办的名校。

宾大、费城和富兰克林

　　宾州大学建于一七四零年。

　　费城在十八世纪上半叶时是大英帝国中除了伦敦之外最大的城市,在当时布满森林的美洲大陆,更是光见的最先进发达与成熟的城市。

　　本杰明·富兰克林在这城成为美国历史上最活跃也最有影响、贡献最为广泛的公民之一。

　　他从波士顿刚来费城闯江湖时身无分文,只是腋下夹着一块面包的年轻人,几十年后,富兰克林发明了眼镜,提议实施夏令时,把邻居们组织起来修街道与装设更好的照明设施。他发起组织了美国第一个反奴隶制的社团,协助建立了美洲大陆上第一所图书馆、第一座医院和第一家火灾保险公司。

　　他的另一个给美国的重大贡献,就是提议建立一所费城学院（academy and college of philadelphia）。

　　一七七九年,费城学院,也就是宾州大学的前身,开设了美国第一所医学院,使它变成了美国第一所有研究生的大学。

　　现在的宾州大学,校园里仍处处可见老本杰明的雕塑和以他命名的建筑。宾州大学最引人瞩目的雕塑之一,是校中心庭院里的一颗巨大的扣子,却破碎成两半——老本杰明很胖,据说有一次竟把他衬衫的扣子撑破了！

重心是实用专业培训

　　与它的常春藤姊妹比起来,宾州大学最与不同的显著特点,是重心放在了专业预料和职业培训上。

　　当年老本杰明成立学校时,欣赏的正是实用的训练,而不是当时新英格兰那些高等学府典型的纯学术钻研和灌输。他说他的大学应该是一个为公民而设立的教育,其目的是通往生意或是政治的成功。

　　因此,宾州大学的重心一直是在实用专业的培训上,它的十二所研究生院知名度最高,尤其是华顿财政学院（wharton school of finance,有人又译作华顿商学院）,在全国财经学院的排名榜上几年来一直在前两名之内,与哈佛商学院不分轩桎,不知培养了多少在全球商界翻云覆雨的总裁和经理。有人甚至说,进了华顿,后半生就有了保障。

　　一九九七年十月底,中国国家元首江泽民刚刚在白宫跟克林顿总统唇枪舌剑一场,当天下午匆匆访问宾州大学时宣布：中国将委托华顿商学院培养高级经济管理人才。

　　宾州大学安能堡大众传播学院（annenberg school of communication）、法学院、医学院和兽医学院也在全美国享有盛名。就连它的四所本科学院里,也有三所是把重心放在专业培训上：工程学院、护士学院和华顿商学院的本科分支。

　　宾州大学在其两个多世纪的岁月中,直到近数十年才逐渐地对人文综合性教育也重视起来。它的艺术科学学院甚至偶尔有碰上诺贝尔文学奖得主的机会。

　　为了提高本科教育的质量,宾州大学建立了独特的统一系统（unisystem）——艺术科学学院处在这个系统的中心,其它三个本科学院和十二个研究生院围着它转,为它提供它们的资源和课程。

学术质量与知名度不成正比

　　奇怪的是,尽管华顿商学院赫赫有名,一般人在提起美国最佳大学的本科时,竟想不起还有个宾州大学来。事实上,它是美国大学中历史最悠久也最有声望的大学之一。在《美国新闻与世界报导》刊上的排行榜一直是前十名左右,一九九八年与达特茅斯学院并列第七。

　　八十年代后期、九十年代初期,有赖几位富有校友的慷慨捐助,使它的知名度提升,同时也发了一笔财,再度成为最热门的大学之一。宾州大学现在简直在钱里打滚。学生们兴奋不已地议论说,简直好像在举行比赛,看谁能给得最多！学生委员会的领袖号召学生们给捐出巨款的校友大亨们写感谢信,在学生们引起的回响不小。

　　除了在商业、财经方面声望极高,宾州大学的历史、英语专业也非常好；它的考古系与芝加哥大学并驾齐驱,双双成为全国最佳；而在企业管理和科技专业方面也非常出色。不出所料,财经是宾州大学学生们最喜欢的专业,而英语和心理学紧跟其后,师资阵容也十分强大。宾州大学的图书馆有四百二十万册藏书,录取 率虽然在常春藤盟校中算比较高的（一九九七年是百分之三十三）但也算得上是有竞争力。

　　最令宾州大学学生们愤愤不平的是,他们的大学常常被其它常春藤盟校学生看成是为进不了更好学校的学生们准备的一所安全学校。我来宾州大学是因为它的学术成就！一位学生加重语气强调说。

　　除此之外,宾州大学又有幽静的学术环境与世外桃源般的校园,又紧靠着费城——美国第四大城市活跃的现实生活,直是得天独厚。

大家都骄傲,谁最骄傲？

　　思想前卫的宾州大学还是好几个使学生十分骄傲的第一——它是美国大学中第一个录取女生的（一八七七）,也是第一个录取黑人学生的（一八七九）。一九九四年,它又创了一个第一,成了第一个聘用女性校长的常春藤大学——朱迪·罗丹,耶鲁的前院长,欣然前往宾州大学履新。

　　尽管近年来罗丹校长对艺术科学学院全力栽培,它的学生有时仍会抱怨他们在华顿的阴影腌盖下。艺术科学学院似乎在全力抵抗着华顿预科的压力和吸引力,来推动全面的综合教育。

　　这也引起宾州大学内部华顿的预科生与艺术科学学院的综合生的对峙。你们肯定能认出他们（华顿的学生们）,你跟他们一起存在,但你知道他们是谁。一个艺术科学学院的本科生警告道。

　　另一个忠实的民主党人愤愤不平地说：大学生们是自由派的,投票给杜卡基斯的,而华顿的人们保守,他们给布什投了票。如果你不理会那些华顿的人的话,综合教育在宾州在学还是满吃香的。

　　而华顿商学院的未来银行家们确实非常认同他们的学院,在学校里不免显出趾高气扬的样子。一位学生洋洋得意地说：就像我在学校的预科专业所证明的,我准备非常舒适地生活。

什么样的人最能适应宾州大学的生活？绝大多数学生的答案是：社交性强的人。

　　宾州大学的兄弟姊妹会势力很强,在校的男生说,在同学中有相当的压力要参加这种入会手续和仪式繁琐的组织。一旦完成了必须经过的仪式入会以后,学生们就有了一个基本的社交圈子和在校几年一起住的伙伴们——许多成为他们一生的挚友。

　　当然,兄弟会举行的派对酒会在美国校园中也是出了名的。派对以供应含酒精饮料而著称,无视校方禁止不到年龄的学生喝酒的禁令,令校方非常头疼。

　　不过,这大概也是大学生们必然经历的成人礼。

艺术博物馆的中国国宝

　　大部分宾州新生们住在校园里的方庭中,那里的三十九座建筑围成两个院子,是校园社交活动的中心,房间又大又好,是学生中间最抢手的住处。

　　宾州大学坐落在费城市区一角,校外不远就是衰落危险的社区,其景象可以与哥伦比亚大学所在的纽约哈莱姆区,或是耶鲁大学坐落的纽黑文市比美。

　　如果你不在学校里住的话,别走太远；不然的话,祝你回学校走运。一位学生这样警告说。尽管这样,仍有多达百分之四十五勇敢的学生在校园外住。

　　对了,顺便提一句：宾州大学艺术博物馆颇值得一观。那里陈列有不少中国文物,尤其是几件非常珍贵的中国国宝,如已有一千三百年历史的昭陵六骏中的两骏,将访问美国的江泽民也吸引来了。

　　昭陵六骏本是唐太宗李世民最钟爱的六匹骏马,他死后陵墓前就竖起六匹马的浮雕与其永远相伴。战火灾难,其中两匹马飒露紫与拳毛骊竟流落到了宾大。据说它们马上要党政军给中国,与现正陈列在北京故宫博物院的其它四匹重新团聚。

加州的斯坦福大学经常名列大学排行榜前三名。

中新网1月24日电 据美国《星岛日报》报道,由《美国新闻与世界报导》评选的2013全美最佳大学排行榜日前揭晓,美东的哈佛大学(harvard)与普林斯顿大学(princeton)并列第一,加州的斯坦福大学(stanford)和加州理工学院(cal tech)分列第七和第十名。主办单位认为,入选排行榜的院校,最重要是教学水平和学术价值都高于平均线。

美国大学排名榜一向深受华人学子的重视,名校毕业是一块金字招牌,日后可以成为求职、升迁、甚至选举公职的重要资本,不少华裔学生宁可放弃他校提供的全额奖学金,也要去排名数一数二的名校深造。

　　作为美国久享盛誉的名校,哈佛大学的建筑学研究已经形成了浓厚的专业和学术氛围,组建了规模庞大的设计学研究生院（graduate school of design）,下设建筑学（architecture）、景观建筑学（landscape architecture）和城市规划设计（urban planning & design）三大系别,为申请者提供硕士和博士学位。

　　哈佛大学设计学研究生院提供的硕士学位包括以下方向：
（1）设计学历史和理论（history & theory ）
（2）设计学技术（technology & design）
（3）不动产管理和项目管理（real estate & project management）
（4）城市化和住宅研究（urbanization & housing studies）

　　学院同时为有志于从事建筑学学术研究的申请者提供了设计学博士和建筑学博士两种博士学位。

 据美国媒体报道,拥有7名成员的哈佛理事会11日选举该校历史学家德鲁·吉尔平·福斯特为哈佛第28任校长。现年59岁的福斯特意识到了她出任哈佛校长的意义。她在当日举行的一个新闻发布会上说：我希望我的任命能成为一个机会均等的象征,这是上一代人还难以想象的事情。我不是哈佛女校长,我是哈佛校长。福斯特是哈佛大学拉德克利夫高等研究院的院长,此前从未领导过大型学府。拉德克利夫高等研究院也是哈佛目前最小的学院,前身是哈佛女子学院,学院资助的大部分研究也主要集中在女性、性别和社会问题方面。
